Together with different partners from industry and research institutes Hightex
has successfully developed and investigated a broad range of new
technologies for foils and textiles (membranes) for building construction.
Selected key words are:
• Innovative transparent thermal insulation for membranes, i.e. Aerogels
• Embedded flexible photovoltaic for foils and textiles
• Innovative functional coatings on textiles and foils (selective, low-E)
Currently, a large research project ('MESG') funded by the German parliament (through BMWi) explores the potential of membrane structures for improving the building stock. Also new concepts of modular design and construction for membrane structures have been followed up (as known from the glass facade industry: post/rail types, element facades).
The new ideas, results, technologies and products will be presented including their application on key innovative projects recently completed such as Dolce Vita Tejo / Portugal (cp. photograph on the right), Bergwacht Bad Tölz, Wimbledon Stadium etc. Key building physics aspects will be explained.
Special attention will be given to a comparison of glass and foils/textiles highlightening the specific differences and advantages of both materials. This also
includes their potential combination to benefit from both their opportunities and
strengths.
