Nestlé Science & Research focuses on Nutrition and Health

People of all ages are increasingly aware about the link between diet, metabolism and the health status of the human body. Accordingly, consumers demand nutritious and healthy food products. In this context health is not simply the prevention from disease. It also encompasses cognition and learning, physical and athletic performance, gut comfort, and avoiding allergic reactions and intolerances.

Nestlé Science & Research addresses these consumer needs through a multidimensional
research strategy comprising Nutritional Science, Food Science & Technology, Consumer Science and research in the area of Quality & Safety. Research teams from diverse fields including technology, process engineering, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, allergy, gut physiology and bioavailability are working on new approaches to improve the nutritional value of food while maintaining good taste. Nestlé scientists focus on providing food and beverages for optimal growth and development, protection, digestive comfort, weight management, healthy aging, healthy recovery, performance and skin health & beauty.

These efforts are supported by over 200 external partnerships and collaborations with worldwide leading universities and research institutes. In Bavaria, Nestlé Science & Research collaborates with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Fraunhofer Institutes.

Additionally in Bavaria, Nestlé has manufacturing locations in Biessenhofen, Weiding, and Munich. These respective facilities produce a variety of products including infant formulas, cereals, baby food, ready-to-drink beverages and performance nutrition products. Although these locations in Bavaria focus more on Nestlé’s business and production aspects, the nutritional profiles of the products manufactured in these sites are continuously improved, according to the latest scientific findings. In the past few years, each of the above mentioned product categories have been strengthened by significant scientific innovation related to nutrition and health.

For example, the production of high protein PowerBars at PowerBar Europe in Munich is supported through the scientific contribution of Nestlé Science & Research. Furthermore, infant formulas are fortified with micronutrients and bioactive ingredients such as polyunsaturated fatty acids and probiotics, both of which are very beneficial for the growth, development and protection of infants. The associated health claims are substantiated by various research studies from Nestlé scientists.
Finally, for the production of baby food in Bavaria, innovative processes developed within Nestlé Research are used to maintain the freshness and nutrient content of the raw materials.

Nestlé continuously invests in its Bavarian sites. In fact, Nestlé is currently investing more than 100 million Euros to extend and upgrade its manufacturing facilities for hypoallergenic infant formula in Biessenhofen.
