Both provide a technology which acts without heat and without high shear stress. Disruption of cells up to 2 logs as well as protection or inactivation of proteins can be easily gained by varying process conditions. A German university has developed a new process to separate and purify biomolecules. It is based on tuneable aqueous polymer phase impregnated resins. It goes beyond conventional aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) by overcoming the long phase separation time. Furthermore capacities are higher and applications flexible. Dutch scientists from an academic medical center have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that are associated with the risk of developing restenosis in response to balloon angioplasty. When incorporated in a SNP detection kit, these SNPs may be used to diagnose a patient with increased risk of restenosis before performing coronary angioplasty.
